Gastropods arose from when a monoplacophoran ancestor underwent torsion, which is a 180° twist of the visceral mass. The characteristic of this taxon is that all gastropods exhibit torsion in some degree. (Ruppert et al. 2004) The species classification of M.marginalba is as follows:
